2 Days of Exploring the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria
Day 4
The weather was not on our side as we left the Twelve Apostles, in fact it more of less followed us all the way back to Melbourne and on to the Mornington Peninsula.
The Mornington Peninsula has long been established as Melbourne's favourite playground located about an hours drive south east of Melbourne.
If there is something familiar about the Mornington Peninsula its because it has a bit of a Mediterranean feel about it especially with the olives groves and vineyards dotted around. Its a great location to escape from the city and head for some truly idyllic beaches with some pretty familiar names!
We were staying for two nights however the rain had followed us so we didn't really get to see the beauty of this place until the next morning.
Day 5
We got up bright and early and after breakfast we checked out of the hotel and headed off to explore.The area is particularly well known for its wine so we headed off on the wine trail and stopped at the Yabee Lake Vineyard
Here we were able to sample a wonderful selection of their wines, one of our favourites was the 2018 Yabby Lake Single Vineyard Pinot Gris and the sparkling 2012 Yabby Lake Cuvee Nina. Some of these wines can be found in M&S and Waitrose.
The Yabba Lake Cellar Door is a restaurant within the Vineyard and the menu looked amazing, its obviously the perfect spot to escape the city and enjoy the region and in fact a group of 4 arrived by helicopter whilst we were there!
After the wine tasting we headed off down the coastal road, where we stopped to enjoy fish & chips on Rye Beach
Taking its cue from Mediterranean influences, Mornington Peninsula offers laid-back coastal charm in a typically Australian fashion. There are plenty of water sports to try and we saw people sailing, surfing, kayaking and even paddle boarding as the water here is perfect for that as well as being totally safe to swim. It was also the first time we got to test the water ourselves!
Continuing down the coastal road we visited some beautiful coastal resorts before heading to St Andrews, well my husband is called Andrew so we felt it was somewhere we had to go and even better we had heard there was a beach brewery there!!
The St Andrews Brewery is in a unique venue, once a horse training stables, they are certainly not your average brewery. The brewery is situated on a 92 acre estate; formerly known as ‘Markdel’ which was owned by the Freedman Brothers, one of Australia’s most successful horse training families who produced over 100 winning horses including multiple Melbourne Cup winners.
The centre of the old training area is where the brewery and beer garden are whilst the old stables are now converted into dining areas perfect for a private party.
They produce a number of beers of which are unpasteurised and brewed on site in our state of the art brew house and they are all inspired by the unique story of the property; using the finest aroma hops and heirloom variety malt. Also packaged on site with their own kegging and bottling.
After dinner that evening we headed to the Peninsula Hot Springs which is a natural hot springs and day spa. Its natural thermal mineral waters flow into pools dotted around the gardens, some are in caves and up stone steps, the gardens are sprinkled with fairy lights which just adds to the whole atmosphere and with the sound of nature and nearby frogs you can really immense yourself in nature.
There are various packages you can buy and you can spend as long as you really want to. We got there just before the sunset. The pools all have different temperatures. Why not cool down in the ice cave or warm up in the Sauna. You can hire towels and bathrobes if you don't want to take yours with you.
On our way home we picked up a few essentials at Woolworths and BWS (wine store)
